
Hon Gai Church was first built in 1933, in the Roman architectural style, with two towering bell towers, overlooking Bai Tho Mountain. The church is the center of the Catholic community in Ha Long, with about 2,000 parishioners. The church is also the place where cultural and religious activities take place, such as Christmas, Easter, Sacred Heart… Hon Gai Church is also the place where historical events were witnessed, such as the Yen The uprising, the resistance war against France, the war against the US… The church was bombed by US aircraft in 1967, causing serious damage.
After many years, Hon Gai Church was rebuilt in 1998, with the contribution of parishioners and the state. The new church was built in modern architecture, with the dominant white color, creating brightness and solemnity. The church has an area of 1,200 m2, including a main church, a secondary church, a rectory, a dining room, a nursery, a playground, and a green campus. The church is also equipped with modern equipment, such as sound, light, air conditioning, camera… The church can accommodate about 1,000 people, serving the needs of parishioners and tourists.
