
Geographical location
Ha Long has a favorable geographical location, located on the important traffic axis of the region and internationally. The city is about 160 km east of the capital Hanoi, about 180 km north of the international border gate Mong Cai with China, and about 10 km south of the international port Cai Lan. The city has a natural area of 1,119.12 km², including 1,969 islands on Ha Long Bay, accounting for 70% of the bay area. The city has 21 wards and 12 communes, with a total population of 322,710 people (in 2019).

Ha Long belongs to the coastal climate region, each year has 2 distinct seasons, winter (dry season) and summer (rainy season). The average annual temperature is 23.7°C, the average humidity is 84%. Winter lasts from November to April next year, with average high temperatures from 20°C to 24°C, average low temperatures from 14°C to 18°C. Summer lasts from May to October, with average high temperatures from 28°C to 31°C, average low temperatures from 22°C to 27°C. The average annual rainfall is 2,014 mm, in which August is the month with the highest rainfall (261 mm), January is the month with the lowest rainfall (15 mm). Ha Long is less affected by big storms, but there can be seasonal winds and fog in winter.
