Than Tho Lake is located about 6 km east of the city center of Da Lat, along Ho Xuan Huong street, near the National Military Academy of Da Lat (now the Army Academy)¹. The lake was formed in 1917, when the French built a dam to block the Cam Ly stream, constructing a reservoir to supply water for the city of Da Lat. The lake has an area of about 9 hectares, located on a high hill amidst a pine forest, a peaceful and poetic space.
Than Tho Lake is associated with a sad love legend of Hoang Tung and Mai Nuong, two people deeply in love, but prevented by their family. They ran away together into the lake, and committed suicide to be together forever. Since then, the lake is named Than Tho, and becomes a symbol of eternal love.
