Ti Top Island was originally named Cat Nang or Hong Thap Tu, in memory of the French sailors who died and were buried on the island. In 1962, when President Ho Chi Minh and Soviet astronaut Gherman Titov visited the island, Uncle Ho suggested renaming the island to Ti Top, to commemorate this event and express the friendship between the two countries.
