Geographical location of Hue

Hue is located on the coast near the southernmost part of the North Central region, on the land strip of central Vietnam. Hue has an area of over 5,000 km2, with a population equivalent to 1.2 million people. Hue borders Quang Tri province to the north, Quang Nam and Da Nang to the south, Laos to the west, and the East Sea to the east. Hue has 9 administrative units including 1 city, 2 towns, and 6 districts. The city of Hue is located in the center of the province, stretching along the Huong River, which is known as the poetic Huong River.

Climate and weather of Hue

Hue has a tropical monsoon climate with a hot dry season and a cold wet rainy season, classified as Koppen climate, quite similar to Quang Tri. However, Hue’s weather is quite harsh with differences between regions and areas throughout the province. High temperature, abundant radiation. The seasons in Hue are not clearly spring, summer, autumn, and winter like in the north but change irregularly. The beginning of the year usually has warm sunshine, but basically there are 2 main seasons:

  • Hot season: from May to September, the heat rises to the peak with a fairly high temperature from 35 to 40 °C, affected by the southwest monsoon.
  • Cold season: lasts from October to March of the following year, affected by the northeast monsoon so it rains a lot, during this period floods will appear from around October onwards. The average temperature in the cold season in the plains is 20°C – 22°C.

The rainfall regime in Hue is large, averaging over 2700 mm, concentrated from September to February of the following year, some places over 4000 mm, accounting for 70% of the total annual rainfall, November alone accounts for 30% of the annual rainfall. Average humidity 85%-86%. Storms in Hue are affected by 2 main wind directions: Southwest monsoon and Northeast monsoon.

Hue’s weather often changes according to the season and the monsoon periods, depending on your time and preferences to choose the best time to go to Hue below:

  • If you want to travel to Hue, you should choose the time from February to April, when the weather is warm, less rain, suitable for visiting historical and cultural relics.
  • If you like to participate in Hue’s unique festivals, you should come in April, when there is the Hue Festival, the city’s largest cultural event, held every two years.
  • If you want to enjoy the beautiful and pristine beaches of Hue, you should come in the summer, from May to August, when the sea is calm and clear.
