Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (Hanoi, Vietnam)

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is one of the most unique and attractive museums in Hanoi, attracting millions of visitors each year. The museum was established in 1997, under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, with the function of researching, collecting, preserving, and displaying artifacts and documents about ethnic groups inside and outside the country.

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology covers an area of over 4 hectares, consisting of two areas: the indoor exhibition area and the outdoor exhibition area. The museum is an ideal place for you to learn about the history, culture, customs, beliefs, and art of the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam, as well as other ethnic groups around the world.

The indoor exhibition area consists of two main buildings: The Red River Delta building introduces ethnic groups living in the Red River Delta region, such as the Vietnamese, Thai, Tay, Nung, San Diu, Chinese, Muong, Kho Mu, Dao, Hmong, Lao, Lu, Giay, San Chay, and Cong. The Southeast Asia building introduces ethnic groups living in the Southeast Asia region, such as Cambodians, Laotians, Thais, Malays, Indonesians, Filipinos, Singaporeans, Bruneians, and East Timorese.

  • You can admire the characteristic artifacts of the ethnic groups, such as costumes, jewelry, household items, worship items, children’s toys, production tools, art items, musical instruments, cultural items…
  • You can also view maps, images, videos, models, tables, charts, diagrams, paintings, statues, portraits… about ethnic groups, as well as performances, traditions, festivals, rituals, customs of ethnic groups.

The outdoor exhibition area is where you can see the houses, architecture, landscapes, terrain, plants, animals… of ethnic groups.

  • You can step into the houses to feel the living space, activities, work, rest, entertainment of ethnic groups.
  • You can participate in folk games, practical activities, experiments, exploration, creativity, learning… of ethnic groups.
  • You can meet, exchange, chat, ask questions, share, learn… with artisans, guides, volunteers, local communities… of ethnic groups.
  • You can enjoy the food, drinks, specialties, souvenirs… of ethnic groups.
