Imperial Citadel of Thang Long (Hanoi, Vietnam)

Thang Long Imperial Citadel is an important historical, cultural, and architectural relic of Vietnam, recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage in 2010. Thang Long Imperial Citadel is the political, cultural, and military center of many feudal dynasties in Vietnam from the 11th to the 18th century. Thang Long Imperial Citadel consists of three main areas: Kinh Thanh (Capital Citadel), Hoang Thanh (Imperial Citadel), and Cam Thanh (Forbidden Citadel), each area has its own distinctive features and high artistic value.

Kinh Thanh is the largest area, surrounded by four rivers and a system of ramparts. Kinh Thanh is where people live and also where economic, commercial, religious, and educational activities take place. In Kinh Thanh, there are many beautiful architectural works such as Temple of Literature – Quoc Tu Giam, One Pillar Pagoda, Tran Quoc Pagoda, Bach Ma Temple, Quan Thanh Temple, and many other temples and pagodas.

Hoang Thanh is the inner city area, including palaces, mansions, institutes, and important agencies of the court. Hoang Thanh is where the authority and civilization of the Vietnamese kings are shown. Hoang Thanh has many unique and sophisticated architectural works such as Do Gate, Can Nguyen Palace, Kien Trung Palace, Kinh Thien Palace, Can Chanh Palace, Hau Lau, and lotus ponds, fish ponds, flower gardens.

Cam Thanh is the outer city area, is the private residence of the king and the royal family. Cam Thanh has four gates, of which Ngoa Van Gate is the most famous because it is where King Ly Thai To built Thien Phuc Temple and Bao Thap Tower. Cam Thanh also has many distinctive architectural works such as Phuong Hoang Palace, Long An Palace, Khai Thanh Palace, Thai Hoa Palace, Ngu Tien Palace, and fountains, glass bridges, stairs.

Thang Long Imperial Citadel is a priceless cultural heritage of the Vietnamese people, a symbol of history, tradition, and national spirit. Thang Long Imperial Citadel is an attractive and interesting destination for domestic and foreign tourists, a place to learn, explore and experience the culture, art, and life of the Vietnamese people through the ages.
