The Nha Trang Oceanographic Institute was established in 1922 during the French colonial period, originally named the Indochina Oceanographic Fisheries Institute. The institute is located on a high, 20-hectare plot near Cau Da port, about 4km from the center of Nha Trang city. The Oceanographic Institute has a convenient geographical location, close to international waters and has the deepest coastline in Vietnam.
The Nha Trang Oceanographic Institute has two main areas: the specimen display area and the marine creature breeding area. The specimen display area has more than 20,000 specimens belonging to about 5,000 species of marine animals, classified into groups such as coral, crustaceans, invertebrates, fish, shellfish, vertebrates. The marine creature breeding area has glass tanks and outdoor tanks, where you can admire more than 300 species of living marine creatures such as sea turtles, sharks, stingrays, seahorses, dolphins. You can also participate in interesting activities such as touching marine creatures, feeding fish, watching performances of dolphins and sea dogs.
The Nha Trang Oceanographic Institute is not only an important scientific research center on Vietnam’s marine resources and ecology, but also a place to educate and raise awareness about marine environmental protection. The Nha Trang Oceanographic Institute welcomes guests from 6am to 6pm daily, except for holidays and Lunar New Year. The entrance fee is 40,000 VND for adults and 20,000 VND for children.
