Non Nuoc Mountain, also known as Duc Thuy Son, is a small mountain located at the river junction, where the Van River flows into the Day River, between Non Nuoc Bridge and Ninh Binh Bridge. The mountain is an outpost located at the eastern gateway of Ninh Binh City. The path to the top of Non Nuoc is through 72 stone steps, divided into 5 levels. The mountain top is relatively flat, with lush green trees, and the air here is cool all year round. Non Nuoc Mountain has been ranked as a historical and scenic national monument of special importance in Vietnam, along with Whale Mountain, Kite Mountain, and Unicorn Mountain, known as the Four Great Mountains – the four famous mountains of Ninh Binh City.
Non Nuoc Mountain is associated with many important historical events, such as the transition from the Dinh dynasty to the Le dynasty, when Queen Mother Duong Van Nga handed over the Dragon Robe to General Le Hoan to lead the army to repel the first invasion of the Song dynasty. Non Nuoc Mountain is also called Poetry Mountain, because on the mountain wall there are more than 100 poems, prose, and odes carved in stone by famous poets, such as Truong Han Sieu, Pham Su Manh, Nguyen Trai, Le Thanh Tong, Le Hien Tong, Nguyen Du, Thieu Tri, Tu Duc, Tan Da… These poems praise the beauty of Non Nuoc Mountain, express love for the homeland, the country, and the national spirit.
