Sapa Stone Church (Sapa, Vietnam)

The Stone Church in Sapa is a must-visit destination when you come to Sapa. This is a Catholic church built in 1926, in the Roman Gothic architectural style, with towering bell towers. The Stone Church in Sapa is located in a prime location, right in the center of Sapa town, behind is Ham Rong Mountain.

Coming to the Stone Church in Sapa, you will admire an ancient and unique architectural work, bearing the imprint of the French. The Stone Church has a total area of about 6000m2 and is divided into many different areas. Mainly tourists often visit the church area, however, there are other areas such as the livestock area, the parish houses, the angel house, the Holy Garden,… Among them, especially the angel house consists of 3 floors for travelers and sick people to stay overnight. The church is built of hewn stone, linking the stone blocks is a mixture of sand, lime, and sugarcane molasses. The church ceiling is pyramid-shaped, built according to the ancient Roman Gothic architecture, clearly shown especially in the roof, bell tower, spiral dome,… all pyramid-shaped giving the work a soaring, graceful look.

The Stone Church in Sapa is also a place where you can learn about the culture, customs, and life of the local people. The church is the main religious activity place of the parishioners in Sapa. If you come here on Saturdays every week, you can witness firsthand the unique cultural activities of the ethnic minorities that tourists are familiar with the name “love market”. Combined with that is the prayer work taking place on weekends with hymns in Hmong language of the children.

In addition, the Stone Church in Sapa is also a highlight for the poetic and mysterious picture of Sapa. The church is surrounded by mountains, flower fields, terraced fields, creating a harmonious and beautiful scene. The church becomes more sparkling and impressive when lit up at night, or when covered by fog or white snow in winter.
